HEADLINE: India’s GDP Surges to 7.8% in Q1, Modi Hails “Herculean” Feat

India’s economy grew 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter of FY 2026-27, government data released Monday showed, comfortably outpacing the 6.9 per cent growth recorded in the same period last year and beating market expectations.

The growth, however, was slower than the 8.6 per cent expansion recorded in the January-March quarter, according to official figures.

Nominal GDP for the quarter stood at ₹88.27 lakh crore, up from ₹80.00 lakh crore a year earlier, marking a 10.3 per cent rise. Real Gross Value Added (GVA) grew 8.2 per cent to ₹73.82 lakh crore, while nominal GVA rose 11.5 per cent to ₹80.53 lakh crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the figures, describing the growth as a “herculean feat” achieved despite oil price shocks, supply chain disruptions and global economic uncertainty.

“India’s exemplary GDP growth of 7.8% during Q1 of FY 2026-27 is a herculean feat,” Modi said in a post on X, crediting the performance to the collective strength of the country’s people.

The Prime Minister added that the figures had proved doubters wrong, positioning the results as a rebuttal to critics of the government’s economic policies.

The data reaffirms India’s position as one of the fastest-growing major economies amid a challenging global backdrop.
