Bangladesh’s reported decision to acquire 24 Chinese J‑10CE multirole fighter jets marks one of the most consequential defence developments in South Asia in recent years. While the move may appear to be a routine military procurement, the broader geopolitical context reveals a deeper realignment shaped by China’s expanding influence, Bangladesh’s modernisation ambitions, and India’s evolving security concerns.
According to reports, the proposed package—discussed during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China—could be worth around USD 2.2 billion. The deal is expected to include aircraft, weapons, training, logistics, maintenance, and long‑term support. If finalised, it would represent Bangladesh’s most advanced fighter acquisition to date, significantly boosting the capabilities of the Bangladesh Air Force.
The J‑10CE, an export variant of China’s J‑10C, is equipped with an AESA radar, advanced avionics, and long‑range air‑to‑air missiles, placing it in the class of modern 4.5‑generation fighters. For Beijing, the sale strengthens its defence footprint in South Asia, complementing its existing partnerships with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. For Dhaka, the acquisition aligns with its long‑term goal of modernising its armed forces under the Forces Goal 2030 programme.
The development is being closely watched in New Delhi. India has traditionally viewed Bangladesh as a friendly neighbour, but China’s growing military presence in the region raises strategic concerns. Analysts note that the induction of J‑10CE jets—similar to those operated by Pakistan—could alter the regional air‑power balance and prompt India to accelerate its own fighter procurement programmes, including the AMCA project and the MRFA acquisition.
