Probe at Full Pace: DGP Says Investigation Into Ex-DGP Dhankar’s Death Will Conclude Soon

AGARTALA: Tripura DGP (in-charge) G.S. Rao on Thursday said the investigation into the unnatural death of his predecessor, former DGP Anurag Dhankar, is progressing at full pace and will be completed soon.

Speaking to reporters at the state police headquarters, Rao described it as “a sensitive and sensational case”. He did not announce any timeline for the conclusion of the probe.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead at the state police headquarters on July 20. Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier informed the Assembly that the death was “suicidal in nature”.

Dhankar had led the CBI investigation into the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud involving diamond merchant Nirav Modi. He later headed a Special Investigation Team that reinvestigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Rao also addressed the media on border management. He said 806 km of the 856-km international border with Bangladesh has been fully fenced, with the remainder left unfenced due to difficult terrain, water bodies and dense forest. Police and the BSF have prepared proposals under the Centre’s smart border plan, which will be pursued in phases.
