Ghost in the Rolls? CPI(M) Alleges ‘Phantom Voters’ in Amarpur Draft Voter List

AMARPUR: The CPI(M) has alleged the presence of “ghost voters” in the draft voter list of Amarpur Nagar Panchayat, raising questions over the accuracy of the rolls ahead of the urban local body elections.

Two party leaders addressed the media at the CPI(M) Amarpur office on Thursday, presenting their objections to the list. The party has not been named as having produced evidence in the material available, so the allegations remain unverified.

The claim comes as the State Election Commission begins preparations for elections to 21 urban local bodies, including Nagar Panchayats, whose terms end on December 9. Claims and objections to the draft rolls were to be finalised by October 8, and the final electoral rolls will be published on October 15.

Voter-list accuracy has become a political flashpoint in Tripura. On Thursday, the Congress also held a ‘Black Day’ protest in Agartala over electoral roll issues.
