AGARTALA: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday took out a ‘Save Democracy’ rally in Agartala in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, observing the day as a ‘Black Day’.
Party workers and supporters, dressed in black and wearing black badges, marched through the city. The procession was led by PCC president Ashish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman. Participants carried placards and party flags as they moved through the busy commercial stretch, where police personnel had put up barricades along the route.
The party demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, contending that democratic freedoms were being compromised across the country.
Party leaders said similar programmes were organised in different districts of the state.
The demonstration comes as the State Election Commission has also begun preparations for urban local body polls in Tripura, with final electoral rolls due on October 15.
