Festive Fare: Free Suji, Maida, Sugar For 9.92 Lakh Ration Card Holders

AGARTALA: The Tripura government will provide free suji, maida and sugar to all 9.92 lakh ration card holders in the state during Sharadotsav 2026, the Cabinet decided on Wednesday.

Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Cabinet Spokesperson and Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said each ration card holder will receive 1 kg of sugar, 2 kg of maida and 500 grams of suji under the special festival allocation.

The distribution will require about 1,984 metric tonnes of maida and 992 metric tonnes of sugar. The total expenditure is estimated at ₹9.35 crore to ₹9.85 crore. Chowdhury said distribution will begin around mid-October and continue through the Durga Puja period.

Addressing the supply of sugar through ration shops, the minister said there had been a temporary disruption because of technical issues related to subsidies with the Central Government. He said free sugar would nevertheless be supplied to ration card holders for the Puja festival, and that the issue of regular supply would be reviewed after the festival.
