AGARTALA: TIPRA Motha has won a decisive majority in the Village Committee elections of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), taking 3,428 of the 4,594 seats according to declared results.
Its ally BJP finished second with 859 seats, while the main opposition CPI(M) won 87. Most of the remaining 220 seats went to independents. Many of them are reportedly dissident TIPRA Motha members who contested after rejecting the party’s alliance with the BJP.
The TTAADC areas make up around two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area. Turnout in the polls reportedly crossed 81 per cent, with women voters outnumbering men.
Reacting on October 5, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the early trends were encouraging for his party. He said the results were in line with the ruling NDA’s expectations and pointed to the prospect of building a “new Tripura” by bringing different communities together.
