Count Under Pressure: Clashes, Lathi Charge Reported at Tripura VC Counting Centres

AGARTALA: Tension marked the counting of votes in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections, with reports of protests and clashes emerging from several counting centres.

According to the reports, unrest broke out at some centres during the counting process. At a few locations, police reportedly resorted to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

The reports have not been independently verified, and details such as the exact locations, the groups involved and the cause of the unrest are yet to be officially confirmed. There was no immediate word on any injuries or detentions.

The incidents come as the Tipra Motha Party has won 2,803 of the 3,470 seats declared so far, a dominant majority in the tribal areas.

Village Committees are the lowest tier of governance in the autonomous district council, and the elections have been closely watched across the state.
