AGARTALA: The Battala park, developed in the city under the Smart City project at a cost of crores of rupees, has come under criticism over allegations of drug use inside its premises and unhygienic conditions in the surrounding area.
Residents allege that after evening, the park becomes a gathering spot for drug and alcohol use, with garbage and empty liquor bottles found scattered inside the premises. Locals said this has left many, particularly families, reluctant to use the park.
Outside, fish market waste, fish remains and other garbage have reportedly piled up along the park’s walls and the adjoining road, despite the presence of a Municipal Corporation garbage collection vehicle in the area, residents alleged.
The situation has raised questions over oversight by the police, the Agartala Municipal Corporation, and Smart City authorities responsible for the park’s upkeep. Residents said that building infrastructure under the Smart City project should also come with responsibility for its regular maintenance, cleanliness and safety.
