UNAKOTI: Working journalists of Unakoti district submitted a deputation to the District Superintendent of Police on Tuesday, raising three key demands: ensuring journalist safety, curbing the entry of drugs and illegal Burmese cigarettes into the district, and stopping the misuse of press stickers on vehicles.
Journalists said the deputation followed alleged death threats issued via fake social media accounts against reporters Bikash Kapali and Nazmul Hossain, after they covered a narcotics seizure. An FIR was reportedly filed at Fatikroy police station on August 29, but journalists alleged no visible administrative action had followed. They demanded a swift probe and legal action against those responsible.
The deputation also flagged the regular influx of narcotics and illegal Burmese cigarettes into the district, calling for intensified police surveillance at border areas and entry points. A third demand addressed alleged misuse of press stickers by individuals posing as journalists to facilitate unlawful activities, urging authorities to identify and act against such persons while protecting the credibility of genuine media identities.
Journalists Bikash Kapali, Nazmul Hossain, Uttam Dev, Priyatosh Das, Shubhankar Das and others were present during the deputation.
