Teliamura: A pedestrian sustained critical injuries after being knocked down by a speeding vehicle at Tuichindrai Bazar area under Teliamura police station on Friday night.

The injured person has been identified as Bibek Ranjan Dey (47). According to local sources, Dey had gone to the market area for shopping when a vehicle hit him and fled the scene without stopping. He collapsed on the road following the impact.

Local shopkeepers and pedestrians who spotted him lying critically injured rushed to his aid and alerted the fire services department. Personnel reached the spot promptly and rescued Dey, who was then shifted to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital in a critical condition. His treatment is currently underway at the hospital.

The incident triggered a stir in the locality after the offending vehicle fled without providing any assistance to the victim. Police were informed and have launched a probe into the matter, focusing on identifying the vehicle and its driver responsible for the hit-and-run.

Locals have demanded stricter vigil and better road safety measures in the market area, which reportedly witnesses heavy footfall and traffic congestion, particularly during evening hours when shoppers throng the bazar.
