Belonia : The South Tripura District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with an NDPS case involving the recovery of 29 kg 600 grams of dried cannabis, marking the heaviest sentence handed down in such a case in Belonia to date.
Special Sessions Judge Gobinda Das pronounced the verdict on Friday, convicting Keshab Lal Das alias Keshab and imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The case dates back to April 12, 2025, when Das, a resident of Radhanagar Johor Tilla under P.R. Bari police station, was intercepted by police while carrying a sack from Ghoshkhamar towards Radhanagar. A search led to the recovery of the cannabis, following which a case was registered under Sections 20(b)(ii)(C)/29 of the NDPS Act.
The investigation was carried out by SI Sujit Sarkar and later SI Shishu Kumar Debbarma, who filed the chargesheet. After examining testimony from 14 witnesses, the court convicted the accused on Friday. The case was argued by advocate Subrata Bhattacharya.
Police officials have welcomed the verdict, expressing hope that the stringent sentence will act as a deterrent to drug traffickers operating in the region.
