UDAIPUR: A gang of thieves broke into the Khilpara Post Office here, taking advantage of a holiday, and made off with cash worth over a lakh of rupees along with several other items, police said.
The theft came to light on Thursday when staff member Nanigopal Das arrived to open the post office as usual and found the premises ransacked, with belongings strewn about. The matter was immediately reported to postal officials in the Jamtala area.
Officials who rushed to the spot conducted a preliminary assessment and confirmed that cash worth several lakhs of rupees, along with a number of items, had been stolen. The incident triggered considerable alarm in the locality.
A written complaint was subsequently filed at Radhakishorepur Police Station, following which police reached the spot and launched an investigation. Officers are probing how the thieves gained entry and are working to identify those involved.
Police said efforts are underway to trace the stolen cash and items and apprehend the culprits at the earliest.
