Sonamura: Passengers travelling between India and Bangladesh, along with local residents, have dismissed as baseless a wave of misleading claims circulating on social media regarding the Sonamura Srimantapur International Check Post (ICP), particularly reports linked to large trolley bags used by medical students.
Officials and locals allege that a dishonest network deliberately spread false information online in an attempt to malign the checkpost and its surrounding community.
A team of journalists visited Srimantapur and the ICP area on the spot, speaking directly with passengers crossing in both directions. On camera, several passengers stated unequivocally that no illegal activity takes place at the checkpost, dismissing allegations of harassment against BSF personnel and customs officials as unfounded. They described the conduct of security and customs staff as responsible, courteous, and transparent.
When approached, the officer in charge of the checkpost declined to comment on record but said off-camera that security protocols at the ICP remain strict, and that any specific evidence of irregularities submitted to authorities would result in immediate legal action.
Officials have appealed to the public not to be misled by unverified information circulating on social media, urging people to rely on credible sources instead.
