UDAIPUR: Police foiled an attempt to smuggle over 10 kg of cannabis aboard the moving Kanchanjunga Express near Udaipur railway station on Tuesday morning, arresting two young men in connection with the incident.
The arrested, identified as MD Tushar (20) and Zahid Mia (21), both residents of Sonamura in Sipahijala district, were detained after one of them was seen running to board the moving train shortly after it left Udaipur station. His suspicious movements prompted security personnel to search him, leading to the recovery of a large quantity of dried cannabis from a trolley bag.
Police from Radhakishorepur police station, the GRP, and BSF personnel acted jointly on a prior tip-off about the trafficking attempt.
Preliminary investigation suggests the cannabis was sourced from Sonamura and was allegedly intended to be smuggled to Chennai by rail. Police are probing whether a larger trafficking network is involved.
Udaipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debanjali Roy briefed reporters on the operation, stating that legal action is being taken against the accused while efforts continue to identify other members of the network.
The incident has renewed concerns over railway routes being used for inter-state drug trafficking.
