Power Cut, Meter Forced: TSECL Accused of Coercive Smart Meter Rollout in Nabagram

NABAGRAM: A power consumer in Nabagram, under the Durjoynagar sub-station of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), has alleged that electricity department officials forcibly installed a smart meter at his residence after cutting off his power line, according to a written complaint filed by the consumer.

The consumer alleged that his old meter was functioning properly, and that after he agreed to a switch to a smart meter, a significant discrepancy appeared between readings of the old and new meters. When he raised the issue with department staff, he alleged they damaged the old meter instead of resolving the discrepancy.

He further claimed the newly installed smart meter did not register any readings for two days, and that faulty installation caused a short circuit, damaging 12 bulbs and a ceiling fan in the process.

The consumer said he has held the department responsible for the resulting losses and has sought redressal.

The incident has renewed criticism in various quarters over the state’s smart meter rollout, with allegations that forced installations are continuing on the ground despite official assurances from the Chief Minister, Power Minister, and the electricity department.
