Kumarghat: Anganwadi workers and helpers staged a massive rally here today, protesting the rising prices of essential commodities and demanding fulfilment of an eight-point charter of demands, before submitting a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
The rally was organised by the Tripura Anganwadi Karmi Sangh under the initiative of the Unakoti District Committee of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).
Agitators said the sharp rise in prices of daily essentials has made it increasingly difficult to run the Anganwadi project and the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) in Kumarghat, as is reportedly the case across the state. They cited eggs, soybean oil, paneer, chira, suji and mobile recharge as items costing far more in the market than departmental rates account for.
Among those present were state president Alpana Debnath, BMS Unakoti district secretary Piyush Das, Pecharthal Project president Nayan Mallika Chakma, and Kumarghat Project president Anjali Debnath, besides others.
Debnath and Das alleged that individuals from a rival organisation had been visiting Anganwadi centres to spread confusion, and urged them to desist. They also expressed hope that the state government would give due consideration to the workers’ demands.
