AGARTALA: A state-level workshop on tobacco awareness was organised by the Tripura Volunteer Health Association, bringing together senior government officials, health experts, and dignitaries to discuss the growing concerns surrounding tobacco use in the state.
Sports Minister Tinku Roy attended the programme as the chief guest, along with West Tripura District Zilla Sabhadhipati Biswajit Sheel and Jharna Deb Barman, Chairperson of the Tripura Women’s Commission.
Also present were Sreelekha Roy, President of the Volunteer Health Association of Tripura; Sujit Ghosh, Director of the Volunteer Health Association of Tripura; and Shukla Debbarma, State Programme Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Tripura.
The workshop focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and reinforcing the objectives of the National Tobacco Control Programme across the state. Speakers highlighted the need for stronger community participation and stricter enforcement of tobacco control measures to curb its use, particularly among the youth.
Officials also discussed strategies to strengthen anti-tobacco campaigns and expand outreach programmes in schools, colleges, and public institutions across Tripura, with an aim to build a tobacco-free society.
The event concluded with participants reiterating their commitment to furthering tobacco control initiatives in the state.
