Agartala: The Sadar Sub-Division Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a protest march here today, raising a multi-point charter of demands centred on workers’ rights and civic grievances.
The demonstrators called for scrapping the “anti-worker” Labour Codes and reducing electricity bills. They also demanded the withdrawal of smart meters and the Centre’s newly introduced “G RAM G” scheme, urging a return to the earlier MGNREGA framework along with a daily wage of Rs 700 for rural job scheme workers.
The protesters further flagged concerns over the rising prices of petroleum products and other essential commodities, calling on the government to take immediate steps to check inflation. Among the local civic demands, CITU activists sought the urgent repair of the city’s dilapidated and unusable roads.
The march formed part of a broader mobilisation by the trade union body on issues affecting the working class across the state. CITU leaders reiterated their opposition to the labour reforms, alleging that the changes undermine job security and wage protections for workers, and vowed to intensify their agitation if the demands are not met.
