TELIAMURA: A family living in Chakmaghat Camp under Krishnapur Assembly Constituency has alleged years of deprivation from basic welfare benefits, with the wife of daily wage labourer Paresh Debbarma claiming that money was demanded to convert their APL ration card into a BPL or Antyodaya card.
The family, comprising four members, lives in a dilapidated hut without electricity, and says rainwater leaks through the roof during storms. Despite repeated appeals to elected representatives and government departments over the years, they allege no permanent solution has been provided regarding their ration card status or housing conditions.
Paresh Debbarma’s wife alleged that officials indicated the card conversion would be processed only upon payment, though this claim could not be independently verified, and responses from the concerned individuals were unavailable. Local sources also claimed the family’s APL card had been pledged to an individual in exchange for money — a claim that similarly remains unverified.
The family’s situation stands in contrast to official claims that welfare schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, have reached marginalised communities. Authorities are yet to respond to the allegations, and calls have grown for an impartial probe into the matter.
