India has announced a one‑day national mourning on July 13 following the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al‑Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar and the country’s former emir. The Ministry of External Affairs said the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the late leader, who passed away on Sunday.
According to the MEA, the National Flag will be flown at half‑mast across all government buildings in India where it is regularly displayed. The ministry also confirmed that no official entertainment will take place during the day of mourning.
Sheikh Hamad, widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, ruled from 1995 to 2013 and oversaw the nation’s rapid economic transformation driven by natural gas development, global investments, and diplomatic outreach. His tenure strengthened Qatar’s ties with several countries, including India, which today maintains deep economic and expatriate links with the Gulf nation.
Indian officials noted that Sheikh Hamad played a significant role in shaping Qatar’s partnership with India, especially in energy cooperation and support for the large Indian community living in the country. Tributes poured in from Indian diplomats and leaders acknowledging his contributions to regional stability and development.
The announcement comes at a time when India and Qatar continue to expand cooperation in trade, energy, aviation, and labour mobility. The MEA said India “stands with the people of Qatar in their moment of grief.”
