Agartala: The West District Committee of the Tripura Khetmajur Union organized a mass rally at City Centre in Agartala on Thursday, demanding the immediate resumption of the MGNREGA scheme and the withdrawal of the VBG (Viksit Bharat Guarantee) commercial project, drawing a large turnout of agricultural labourers and working-class people.
Addressing the gathering, union leaders alleged that the MGNREGA scheme has remained effectively suspended for a prolonged period, pushing rural workers into severe financial distress. They said the absence of guaranteed rural employment has left daily wage earners without a stable source of income for months.
Speakers demanded that work under MGNREGA be resumed without delay and that all pending wages owed to workers be cleared immediately. The rally also raised strong objections to the VBG commercial project, calling for its complete withdrawal, though specific grievances against the scheme were not elaborated upon at the event.
Shyamal Dey, West Tripura District Secretary of the Tripura Khetmajur Union, said the organization would intensify its agitation if the government failed to act on their demands. He urged authorities to take swift and concrete steps in the interest of the state’s working population.
The rally passed off peacefully, with participants holding placards and raising slogans in support of their demands throughout the programme.
