MELAGHAR: A gang of dacoits allegedly looted gold ornaments, cash and a DSLR camera from a house at Nalchar Mayarani Uttarpara on Wednesday night, after finding the homeowner’s wife alone inside.
According to sources, Ratan Debnath had not yet returned home around 8 PM, while his son Anupam Debnath was away in Chennai for work. His wife, Anjali Rani Debnath, was reportedly alone when the dacoits allegedly turned on an outdoor water tap to lure her into opening the back door, mistaking the sound for neighbouring children playing.
As she stepped out, two men allegedly overpowered her, held a sharp weapon to her throat and threatened her life before ransacking the house. The gang reportedly fled with nearly three bhori of gold jewellery, cash, and a DSLR camera Anupam allegedly used for wedding shoots.
Police said one of the accused left behind a pair of shoes at the spot in the hurry to escape. Melaghar police reached the site the same night, recovered the footwear, and have launched an investigation.
Residents in the otherwise quiet locality expressed alarm over the incident.
