AGARTALA: Traders of Madhupur Bazar voluntarily demolished their own shops within a week, honouring a commitment made to the district administration to vacate encroached government land.
The development follows an eviction drive last Wednesday, when a large police force, led by the DCM (Deputy Collector-cum-Magistrate), arrived with bulldozers to clear government land encroached upon at the market. Traders subsequently made an earnest appeal to the DCM for a week’s time to vacate the premises themselves.
Keeping their word, the traders dismantled their shops within the stipulated period, freeing up the government land without further administrative intervention.
Following the demolition, traders have now urged the administration to expedite redevelopment work at the market and construct covered drains in the area.
With the Puja festive season approaching, traders expressed hope that the market could be restored to its earlier functional condition before the celebrations begin, to allow business activity to resume smoothly.
The district administration is yet to announce a timeline for the proposed redevelopment work.
