Cut Off in Old Age: Santana’s Allowance Goes Missing

TELIAMURA: An elderly woman from Gamaibari area under Ward No. 15 of Teliamura Municipal Council has appealed to authorities to reinstate her social welfare allowance, which has been stopped for reasons unknown to her.

Santana Bala Das, who lives alone with no family members to care for her, said the monthly allowance was her only means of survival in old age. With her body weakened by age and ailments, she said she has been left struggling to meet even her basic daily needs since the payments stopped, without any prior notice or explanation from the concerned department.

Visibly distressed, Das said she had approached local authorities multiple times seeking clarity on why her allowance was discontinued, but has received no satisfactory response so far. She appealed to the administration to look into her case on humanitarian grounds and restore the allowance at the earliest, given her vulnerable condition and lack of any other source of income.

Local residents have also voiced concern over the matter, urging the social welfare department to ensure that genuine beneficiaries, especially elderly and destitute citizens like Das, are not deprived of the support meant to sustain them in their final years.
