Khumulwng:The Twipra Students’ Union (TSU) Central Committee submitted a memorandum containing six demands to C.K. Jamatia, Executive Member for Education under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), highlighting long-standing gaps in the region’s education infrastructure.
The demands included urgent recruitment of teachers to address the single-teacher problem affecting schools across the TTAADC area, the establishment of a D.El.Ed and a B.Ed college within the region, and the introduction of postgraduate courses in Kokborok, Bengali, and English at Khumulwng Degree College. The union also called for new bus services connecting Agartala, Mandai, and Takarjala to Khumulwng to ease student commutes, a boys’ hostel for colleges in Khumulwng, and new colleges in the Jampuijala and Mandai areas.
Speaking to the media after submitting the memorandum, TSU General Secretary Sujit Tripura said that of the 1,633 schools under TTAADC, a majority were being run by a single teacher, with around 100 schools in a particularly critical condition. He noted that many trained youths holding B.Ed and D.El.Ed degrees remained unemployed, and urged that recruiting them could resolve the staffing crisis.
Tripura also stressed the need for teacher-training colleges within the region, pointing out that students currently had to travel outside the state, including to West Bengal, for such training, incurring additional financial burden.
The delegation, which also included Secretariat Member Ankit Murasingh, Bakhrui Debbarma, and CCM Bishal Debbarma, urged swift implementation of the demands.
