Agartala:Allegations have surfaced against a retired government employee for allegedly occupying government land using his influence, near P.N. Dev Road in the East Shivnagar area of the capital city.
According to local residents, Subal Debnath, the retired employee in question, has been residing on the government plot for several years. Residents further alleged that another individual beside Debnath’s residence has similarly encroached upon government land in the same manner. Adding to the concern, Debnath is said to have recently constructed a concrete boundary wall on the disputed land — a development that residents claim has come to the notice of the area’s chairperson, Sukumoy Saha, who has reportedly chosen not to act on the matter.
Locals alleged that Debnath’s influence in the area has discouraged ordinary residents from speaking out against the encroachment for fear of repercussions. On Thursday morning, after receiving complaints from multiple residents, journalists visited Debnath’s residence to verify the claims. Facing the camera, Debnath reportedly acknowledged the allegations.
Residents are now questioning under whose patronage such construction has been allowed to continue unchecked on government land. They have appealed to the state government and Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumdar to urgently intervene and ensure that the illegally occupied land is reclaimed.
The matter has drawn attention to broader concerns about unauthorized occupation of government land in the city and the apparent inaction of local authorities despite public complaints.
