Teliamura: Two youths lost their lives and another sustained serious injuries after a landslide struck the Chakmaghat Muslim Basti area under Teliamura subdivision in Tripura’s Khowai district on Saturday morning.
The deceased have been identified as James Jamatia (20) and Asha Hari Jamatia (30), while the injured, Amulya Dhan Jamatia (30), is undergoing treatment.
According to reports, all three residents of Kunjamura had gone to the area to collect soil for house construction. While excavating earth from a hillside, a large portion of the slope suddenly collapsed, trapping them beneath the debris.
Local residents and eyewitnesses immediately rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Amulya Dhan Jamatia was pulled out alive with severe leg injuries and was initially taken to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
After prolonged rescue efforts, James Jamatia and Asha Hari Jamatia were recovered from under the debris and taken to the hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
The incident has raised questions over the response of the subdivision’s disaster management authorities. Local residents alleged that while personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) reached the site promptly and played a key role in the rescue operation, the disaster management team arrived much later.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, residents have demanded a thorough inquiry and urged the authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanisms in the area.
