Weak Bamboo Bridge in Chandrapur Katakhal Claims Another Victim, Cow Rescued After Hour-Long Wait

Agartala: A cow fell through a dilapidated bamboo bridge at Chandrapur Katakhal here on Tuesday, reigniting residents’ long-standing complaints over the structure’s unsafe condition. The animal was rescued in an unwell state nearly an hour after fire brigade personnel were alerted, according to local residents.

Villagers allege the bridge, spanning roughly 30 feet, has been perilously weak for a long time and poses a serious hazard to children, the elderly, and those moving with livestock. The structure reportedly deteriorated further following the last two floods in the area.

Residents said the matter has been raised repeatedly with Suma Majumdar, councillor of Ward No. 10 under the 6-Agartala Assembly constituency, but no permanent repair or reconstruction has followed. An estimated 50 to 60 families in the locality depend on the bridge daily, they said.

The incident has revived anger among locals, who are demanding urgent intervention from the administration and the ward’s public representative before a major accident occurs. Residents questioned why action has not been taken despite repeated appeals.

It remains to be seen how swiftly authorities respond to the community’s demand for a safer crossing.
