Agartala: The Tribal Youth Federation (TYF), Central Committee, organized a three-hour-long mass sit-in demonstration in the area adjacent to Agartala Circuit House on Friday, pressing the state government to address a seven-point charter of demands.
Addressing the gathering, TYF General Secretary Kumud Debbarma said the sit-in was organized to draw the government’s attention to long-pending issues affecting the tribal community of the state. He said the organization would continue its agitation until concrete action was taken on the demands raised.
Members and supporters of the federation gathered in large numbers at the venue, holding placards and raising slogans in support of their cause throughout the three-hour programme, which passed off peacefully under police supervision.
While the specific details of the seven-point demand charter were not immediately available, tribal rights organizations in the state have in the past raised issues ranging from land rights and employment opportunities to constitutional safeguards and development funds for tribal-inhabited areas.
The demonstration adds to a series of recent protests and agitations by various organizations across Tripura, reflecting continuing pressure on the state administration over unresolved community demands.
TYF leaders said a memorandum outlining the demands would be submitted to the appropriate authorities, and warned of intensified agitation if the government failed to respond within a reasonable timeframe.
