Agartala:Senior teachers in Agartala staged a major procession and public assembly on Monday, demanding complete exemption from the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for their cadre. The demonstration was jointly organized by TGTA (H.B. Road) and TTA (H.B. Road) along the city’s main thoroughfares.
The unions are pressing the central government to issue an ordinance exempting senior teachers from TET requirements, arguing that the examination framework undermines their established professional standing and social dignity within the education system.
According to the organizers, the exemption should recognize senior teachers’ existing qualifications, experience, and tenure as sufficient credentials without subjecting them to the standardized eligibility test. The protest reflected growing concerns among the teaching community over recent centralized recruitment policies affecting their career progression and institutional status.
The march drew participation from teachers across multiple schools and colleges in the state capital, with several placards and banners reiterating their demands. The unions maintained that compelling experienced educators to undergo TET requirements diminishes their professional credentials and creates administrative hurdles for senior recruitment.
Ashish Choudhury, General Secretary of the Tripura Government Teachers’ Association (H.B. Road), spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing the need for policy intervention to safeguard teaching profession standards in the state.
The demonstration underscores the ongoing tension between centralized education policy and state-level teaching cadres regarding recruitment and qualification frameworks. No official response from the state education ministry has been issued at present.
