Police Seize Foreign Cigarettes Worth Rs. 3 Lakhs at Checkpoint

Agartala:Police seized a large consignment of foreign cigarettes at Laljuri Checkpoint in North Tripura on Monday, recovering contraband valued at approximately Rs. 3 lakhs in the black market.

Acting on confidential information, law enforcement conducted a raid and intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number TR02N0726. A search of the vehicle yielded 196 bundles of Mond brand cigarettes, totaling 39,200 packets.

The confiscated cigarettes have been seized under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), according to police sources. The substantial black market valuation reflects the significant demand for smuggled foreign tobacco products in the region.

Lab De and Sudipta Nath, both stationed at Machmara PTL, played instrumental roles in executing the operation. The seizure represents ongoing police efforts to combat cigarette smuggling through strategic checkpoint operations across the state.

Police sources confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the smuggling network. Authorities are examining the vehicle’s ownership details and supply chain connections to determine the broader scope of the contraband operation.

The checkpoint raid underscores law enforcement’s commitment to intercepting illegal goods and preventing revenue loss through smuggling operations in North Tripura.
