Agartala: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the State Task Force (STF) recovered a huge consignment of banned cough syrup (Eskuf) concealed inside a goods wagon at Agartala Railway Station, officials said.
The contraband was detected late last night during a routine inspection of wagons at the station. Police said the syrup bottles were cleverly concealed inside sacks disguised as ordinary household goods to evade detection. Upon inspection, officials discovered the packages contained banned intoxicant cough syrup instead.
Following the discovery, an overnight search operation was launched at the site. Officials recovered a total of 39,345 bottles of Eskuf syrup packed in 70 drums, with the seized contraband estimated to be worth approximately ₹1.5 crore in the illegal market.
Senior officials, including Tripura Police IGP Manchak Ippar and IG (Intelligence) Krishnendu Chakraborty, personally inspected the spot late last night, along with the GRP Superintendent of Police and other officers, underlining the seriousness with which authorities are treating the seizure.
Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the consignment, as well as to identify those responsible for transporting the contraband through the rail network.
The seizure comes amid intensified efforts by Tripura Police to curb the smuggling of banned substances across the state’s rail and road routes.
