KHOWAI: The Khowai District Court has sentenced two men to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment each and fined them ₹1 lakh apiece after convicting them in a ganja trafficking case involving the seizure of 79 kg of the contraband in 2021.
The convicts, identified as vehicle driver Partha Debnath and co-driver Bijesh Debbarma, were arrested after police intercepted and searched their vehicle at the Hawaibari naka point under Teliamura police station on July 9, 2021, recovering the ganja consignment.
The case was tried before Special Judge Sharmistha Mukherjee at the Khowai District Court, with testimony recorded from 12 witnesses during the trial. After examining the evidence and case records, the court convicted both accused and handed down the sentence.
Legal observers said the verdict sends a strong deterrent message against narcotics trafficking in the state, which has seen a steady stream of drug-related seizures and prosecutions in recent years.
The conviction adds to the district court’s record of enforcement action under narcotics laws in the Khowai region.
