India summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks for the second time in two days to protest a fresh attack on a commercial vessel off the coast of Oman, calling the use of lethal force against civilian shipping unacceptable. The latest incident involved a merchant ship carrying 20 Indian crew members, marking the third attack on vessels with Indian seafarers in four days. Additional Secretary (Americas) Nagaraj Naidu conveyed India’s strong concerns, urging Washington to ensure forces operating in the region take all necessary measures to prevent further loss of civilian lives.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the repeated targeting of commercial vessels threatens the safety, security and stability of international maritime commerce in a sensitive region. It warned that such actions undermine established norms and jeopardise Indian nationals working aboard ships.
Public concern in India has risen sharply after a series of attacks, including the strike on MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman that killed three Indian sailors. According to US Central Command, three vessels carrying Indian crew — MT Marivex, MT Settebello and MT Jalveer — were hit this week as part of operations enforcing Washington’s blockade on Iranian oil exports.
India reiterated that attacks on civilian ships must cease immediately and stressed that the safety of Indian seafarers remains a top priority. The government said it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with regional authorities to ensure the protection of its citizens at sea.
