Family Alleges Foul Play as Undertrial Prisoner Dies at Bishalgarh Jail

Pranab Pal, 57, brought dead to GB Hospital; demand for probe grows

Charilam: The death of an undertrial prisoner at Bishalgarh Central Jail has triggered widespread concern, with family members alleging his death was unnatural and demanding a transparent investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Pranab Pal, a resident of Camp Bazar area. He was arrested about a month and a half ago in connection with an NDPS drug case and was lodged at the jail as an undertrial prisoner. News of his death inside the facility surfaced on Sunday, sparking distress among family members, relatives and locals.

The family alleged that jail authorities failed to provide a clear or satisfactory explanation of the circumstances, timing and manner of his death, raising multiple questions. They said the sudden death of an apparently healthy undertrial prisoner was deeply concerning, and demanded to know whether he had fallen ill beforehand, whether timely medical treatment was given, and whether any unusual incident preceded his death.

Following legal procedure, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the cause of death is expected to become clearer once the report is available. As of this report, jail authorities had not issued any official statement detailing the cause of death.

Locals also demanded a fair investigation, noting that the death of an undertrial prisoner in custody is an extremely sensitive matter requiring impartial scrutiny to determine responsibility.
