BELONIA: An incident of alleged corporal punishment against a seven-year-old student has triggered outrage in Belonia, with the child’s father accusing the school principal of subjecting his son to physical abuse rather than discipline.
According to the complaint, the Class II student of Belonia BKI Institution was allegedly caned in the classroom by principal Kulendra Tripura after he reportedly kicked a classmate. Following a subsequent complaint from an English class, the child was allegedly taken to the staff room, where his uniform was removed and his hands tied behind his back with rope.
The boy’s father, Sushanta Das, said he discovered his son in this condition — bearing cane marks and visibly distressed — when he arrived to collect him after school. He said he had no objection to discipline but described the treatment as tantamount to torture, adding that the child now expresses fear of returning to school.
The incident stands in contrast to central government guidelines, which prohibit corporal punishment and mandate counselling-based approaches to student discipline.
School authorities have not yet issued a response. The father has sought accountability from the institution.
