Agartala: CITU, the All India Kisan Sabha, the Tripura Khetmajoor Union and GMP have jointly called for a widespread agitation across Tripura as part of the nationwide Jal Bharo programme on August 10, aiming for participation of around 10 lakh people nationally.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, CITU state general secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta said the programme, traditionally held every August 9 to mark the 1942 anti-British movement, has been shifted to August 10 this year since August 9 falls on a Sunday. The main event will be held in Agartala.
The organisations raised an 11-point charter of demands, including scrapping anti-worker Labour Codes, 200 days of work under MGNREGA at Rs 700 daily wage, lower prices for petrol, diesel and cooking gas, minimum C2+50% price for farm produce, passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill for greater ADC powers, housing for the homeless, repair of damaged roads, withdrawal of hiked power tariffs and smart meters, action against corruption, regular pay for irregular employees, and stronger measures against violence on women.
Leaders including Manik Dey and Shyamal Dey criticised the BJP government over privatisation, judicial interference and the Ram Mandir corruption row, while Pabitra Kar highlighted farmers’ issues.
