The CPI(M) West Tripura District Committee staged a mass protest demanding accountability from the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) over the continued poor condition of national highways across Tripura, many stretches of which have become virtually unmotorable.
Party workers and supporters gathered to press the authorities for a clear timeline on repair and restoration work, alleging that prolonged neglect of key highway stretches has caused severe hardship to commuters, transport operators, and the general public. Protesters said potholed and damaged roads have led to frequent traffic snarls, vehicle breakdowns, and rising safety risks, particularly during the monsoon season.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury was present at the demonstration, along with other senior party leaders and members of the district committee.
Speaking on the occasion, the leaders criticised the NHIDCL for what they termed a lack of urgency in addressing the issue despite repeated complaints from the public. They demanded that the corporation immediately clarify its repair schedule and take concrete steps to restore the highways to a motorable condition.
The protesters warned that continued inaction could trigger further agitational programmes in the near future.
