Agartala:In a significant development following the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress protest rally held in Agartala on Monday, police arrested Youth Congress President Nil Kamal Saha along with several other agitators and detained them at the A.D. Nagar Police Line grounds. The arrests came after tensions escalated during the demonstration, which had been called to protest against corruption, price rise, unemployment and the NEET question paper leak scandal.
The protest rally, organised under the banner of Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress, had witnessed a large gathering of party workers and supporters who took to the streets demanding justice on several key issues affecting the common people. However, the situation took a sharp turn when the procession reached the Araimesa Chowmuhani area, where a scuffle broke out between the agitating protesters and police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Following the confrontation, police swung into action and detained Youth Congress President Nil Kamal Saha, who was leading the protest from the front, along with a number of other demonstrators. The arrested individuals were subsequently taken to the A.D. Nagar Police Line grounds, where they were held for questioning.
The arrests have triggered sharp reactions from Congress party circles, with senior leaders condemning what they called a high-handed approach by the state government and police machinery to suppress legitimate democratic protest. Party workers who were not arrested gathered outside the police lines, raising slogans demanding the immediate release of their colleagues.
Youth Congress leaders maintained that their agitation was entirely peaceful and constitutionally valid, and accused the authorities of attempting to silence voices of dissent through intimidation and arrests.
The incident has further deepened the political tensions in the state, with the opposition vowing to intensify their movement in the days ahead.
