Agartala: Police have detained a young woman after recovering a large quantity of intoxicating syrup from a rented flat at Arundhati Apartment in Shibnagar.
The flat, owned by Krishanu Dev, had been let out to tenant Liton Debbarma. During a raid, police seized a substantial stock of intoxicating cough syrup, commonly used as a substance of abuse, from the premises. Following the recovery, police detained Sariya Riang, wife of the tenant, for questioning in connection with the seizure.
Sources said the operation was carried out based on prior intelligence regarding the illegal storage and possible sale of banned syrup from the flat. Investigators are now probing the source of the consignment and whether other individuals were involved in its distribution network.
The incident has once again brought into focus the rising trend of syrup and codeine-based intoxicants being smuggled and sold across the state, often targeting youth. Police said further interrogation of the detained woman is underway to ascertain her role and to trace the supply chain.
Authorities have appealed to landlords and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in rented accommodations to curb such illegal trade in the region.
