AGARTALA: Ahead of the launch of Census 2027’s first phase, the Directorate of Census Operations, Government of India, in coordination with the Government of Tripura, held a press conference in Agartala on Friday to brief the media on preparations.
Tripura Director of Census Operations Ratan Biswas briefed reporters on the preparations, methodology and significance of the exercise, which begins Saturday, August 1, with nearly 8,000 enumerators and supervisors deployed across the state for the month-long Houselisting and Housing Census. The field operation will run until August 30, covering households in all eight districts as part of India’s first fully digital census.
Biswas said the census is essential for accurate planning and development, particularly in sectors such as education, healthcare, housing and employment. He said fieldwork will be supervised by District Magistrates functioning as Principal Census Officers in each district, with the Agartala Municipal Corporation Commissioner serving in that role for the AMC area.
Officials stressed that confidentiality and data security remain a major focus, with citizen information protected under the Census Act, 1948, and secured through encryption; citizens will not need to produce identity documents while providing information to enumerators.
