TELIAMURA: Tension gripped the West Hawaibari Kuki Colony area under Teliamura police station on Tuesday after residents detained four youths over allegations of theft and drug dealing in the locality.
According to residents, two youths were first detained early Tuesday morning on suspicion of involvement in drug dealing. During questioning, locals allege, the names of a youth identified as Kalu and his brother emerged, following which the two were also detained by agitated residents.
Locals claimed that drug containers were recovered from the detained youths. All four were allegedly beaten by residents before being handed over to Teliamura police.
Police reached the spot on being informed and took the four youths into custody. An investigation has been launched into the recovered materials and the circumstances of the incident, police said.
Residents said the area had long experienced theft and drug-related activity, which they said had built up public resentment that culminated in Tuesday’s incident.
