Tensions Flare as Tipra Motha-Backed Committee Takes Over Key Livestock Market

MANU: A sharp political shift in local commerce triggered brief unrest at the prominent Machli Market under Manu Sub-Zone on Monday, after a newly formed 9-member committee backed by Tipra Motha officially took over administrative operations from a BJP-aligned management team.

The transition, formally authorized by Member of District Council (MDC) Hollywood Chakma, grants the new committee administrative jurisdiction over the market’s leasing, cleaning, and revenue collection from June 1 to July 1, 2026. The committee was finalized during an emergency meeting at the residence of local leader Bhanujoy Reang.

High drama unfolded when the Tipra Motha members arrived to assume control, prompting a tense standoff with rival factions. Fearing violent clashes, local authorities swiftly intervened. A heavy contingent of state police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and central security forces was deployed to secure the area and stabilize the situation.

Machli Market stands as one of Tripura’s vital economic hubs, attracting thousands of wholesale livestock and vegetable traders every Tuesday. The incoming committee alleged years of severe administrative neglect and pledged to immediately overhaul the market’s crumbling infrastructure and sanitation systems. Officials confirmed that the situation remains normal but closely monitored.
