KAMALPUR: A daring theft at the Loknath Temple in Azad Hind Para, barely 200 metres from Kamalpur police station, has triggered concern in the town after miscreants allegedly made off with the temple’s donation box.
According to local sources, a caretaker locked the temple as usual on the night in question and returned the next morning to find the main gate’s lock broken and the lights switched off. Police were alerted and reached the spot to launch an investigation.
The donation box, which had reportedly been accumulating offerings for nearly a year, is estimated by temple authorities to have contained around ₹15,000.
Police have reportedly taken one Abu Gowala in for questioning as a suspect, though no arrest has been officially confirmed.
The same night, an attempted break-in was reported at the nearby Kamaleswari Kalibari, where miscreants tried but failed to break a lock and enter.
The twin incidents at two religious sites on the same night have raised questions over night patrolling near the police station. Residents have demanded swift arrests and stronger night security in Kamalpur.
