PECHARTHAL: Students of Nabinchara Higher Secondary School blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway No. 8 from Monday morning, protesting an acute shortage of teachers at the school, causing traffic to pile up on both sides of the road in the Nabinchara area.
Holding placards, the students staged a sit-in on the highway, demanding immediate appointment of teachers to fill vacant posts. The blockade brought vehicular movement to a standstill, inconveniencing commuters and creating long queues of stranded vehicles.
Police from Pecharthal police station rushed to the spot to manage the situation, along with the Unakoti District Education Officer and other administrative officials, who engaged with the protesting students.
Following assurances from the officials regarding steps to address the teacher shortage, the students withdrew the blockade at around 12:30 pm, restoring normal traffic movement on the highway.
However, the protesters warned that they would launch a larger agitation in the coming days if adequate teachers are not appointed at the school without further delay, underlining that the ongoing shortage was severely affecting students’ studies.
