AGARTALA: The Bengali Women’s Society on Sunday organised a protest demonstration demanding stronger measures to ensure the social and economic security of women, in order to curb violence against women, murder, rape, and human trafficking across society.
Speaking at the demonstration, the organisers demanded 50 percent reservation of seats for women in employment as well as in legislative bodies such as the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, on par with existing reservation frameworks. They argued that adequate representation and economic empowerment were essential to safeguarding women’s dignity and safety.
The protesters also raised the demand for inclusion of the Bengali language in the list of classical languages under the new National Education Policy, asserting that such recognition was long overdue given Bengali’s rich literary and cultural heritage.
The demonstration saw participation from a large number of women, who carried placards and raised slogans highlighting issues of gender violence, political representation, and linguistic recognition.
Organisers said they would continue pressing these demands until concrete action is taken by the concerned authorities.
