Agartala: CPI(M) workers under the Sadar Sub-Division Committee took out a protest march from Uttar Gate to the office of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) on Monday, raising slogans against a proposed hike in electricity tariffs and demanding the resignation of the Power Minister.
Party workers, carrying banners and placards, also demanded the scrapping of smart meters, alleging that the devices were being imposed on consumers without adequate consultation and were adding to public hardship.
Speaking at the demonstration, CPI(M) leaders raised several issues concerning public life, alleging that the government’s policies were placing an undue financial burden on ordinary citizens through rising utility costs.
The protesters submitted a memorandum outlining their demands to TSECL officials, urging the corporation and the state government to reconsider the tariff hike and withdraw the smart meter initiative.
Police personnel were deployed at the site to maintain order during the demonstration, which concluded peacefully.
The CPI(M) said it would continue to raise these issues and intensify its agitation if the demands were not addressed.
