Melagarh:In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing anti-drug campaign in the state, Melagarh Police successfully intercepted a major cannabis smuggling attempt on Monday, arresting a tomtom driver and recovering more than 14 kilograms of dry cannabis that was allegedly being transported for inter-state trafficking. The operation has been hailed as a major success in the state’s relentless crackdown on narcotics.
Acting on credible information received from a secret source, a police team under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Asit Bhattacharya of Melagarh Police Station swung into action and intercepted a suspicious tomtom vehicle in the Kemtali Molla Mura area, falling under Melagarh Police Station jurisdiction. A thorough search of the vehicle was immediately conducted on the spot.
During the search, police discovered more than 14 kilograms of dry cannabis carefully packed inside black-coloured bags and cleverly concealed within the vehicle. The professional manner in which the contraband was packaged strongly indicated to investigators that the drugs were not meant for local distribution but were instead destined for smuggling to other states outside Tripura.
The tomtom driver, whose identity has been established by police, was promptly taken into custody. A case is being formally registered against the accused under specific sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The arrested driver is currently under interrogation as police seek to unravel the wider network behind this smuggling operation.
Speaking to the media, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Melagarh Police Station confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated and that a thorough investigation is underway to identify all individuals connected to this drug trafficking chain.
Authorities have urged citizens to continue cooperating with police by reporting suspicious activities, reaffirming the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics.
