Agartala: Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past twelve years, evolving from a regional airport with limited connectivity into one of the leading aviation hubs in Northeast India, Airport Director Krishan Mohan Nehra said on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference on the occasion of Yatri Suvidha Diwas 2026, Nehra said that in 2014, Agartala was connected mainly to Kolkata and Guwahati. Today, the airport operates around 35 aircraft movements daily, providing direct connectivity to major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Imphal, Kolkata and Guwahati.
He informed that annual passenger traffic has increased significantly from 8.9 lakh in FY 2014-15 to nearly 15 lakh in FY 2025-26, while annual aircraft movements have risen from approximately 7,000 to nearly 12,000 during the same period.
Highlighting the airport’s focus on passenger convenience, Nehra said several modern facilities have been introduced, including Digi Yatra, self-service check-in kiosks, free Wi-Fi, the Udan Yatri Café, child care rooms, massage chairs and dedicated spaces for local artisans. He urged passengers to make greater use of the Digi Yatra platform for a seamless and contactless travel experience.
The Airport Director also underlined the airport’s commitment to sustainability. He said the airport has already commissioned a 250 kW solar power plant and an additional 60 kW unit, while a 1,600 kW solar power plant is expected to be installed by 2027. Once operational, the solar projects are projected to generate around 21 lakh units of electricity annually, resulting in power cost savings of nearly ₹2 crore every year.
Nehra said the airport will continue to focus on improving passenger services while adopting environmentally sustainable practices to support Tripura’s growing aviation sector.
